A growing number of jobseekers find themselves in the midst of a long-term job search. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, the U.S. jobless rate soared to a four-year high of 5.7% in July 2008 and the average job search took more than four months to net results. However, some critics would put this number and the number of the unemployed much higher.
Helen Kooiman, author of Suddenly Unemployed asserts, "[S]uch statistics are inaccurate indicators. They do not include those whose unemployment benefits have run out or those who don't qualify for unemployment... Such statistics also do not count welfare recipients, temps (who cannot be counted as fully employed), or others who eke out a living on so-called self-employment." Neither do such reports include what the Bureau of Labor Statistics terms "discouraged workers" or those who "were not currently looking for work specifically because they believed no jobs were available for them." Their figures reached 461,000 in July.
A long-term job search can put a tremendous financial and emotional strain on a job hunter. "It's been a demoralizing experience and it's been very difficult budgetwise. I'm a single mother," Kay Marie King says, a former non-profit executive with a wealth of experience that is currently involved in an ongoing job search.
So, what can you do when weeks of a fruitless job search quickly turns to months? Here are seven tips for jump starting a stalled job search:
Tip One: Don't be so quick to blame everything on the economy (your region, your industry, etc.)
These issues certainly play a role in the current job market. However, it is easy to fixate on such factors and completely discount factors which we personally control. The next six tips cover areas that long-term jobseekers do well to revisit to jump start a stalled job search. Why is this so important? I am reminded of a woman I once interviewed that looked great on paper, but during the interview she had an incredibly offensive body odor. She remarked that she'd been on several interviews but she was "overqualified" for every position. While most jobseekers don't have such an obvious issue, each one would still do well to take a long look in the mirror.

Look at yourself from the perspective of the potential employer. Compare your experience and qualifications to those typically required of someone in your target position. How do your skills and experience match up? Think of creative ways to to fill skill gaps and gain experience.
Tip Three: Re-examine your target position or industry.
Are you searching for work in a waning industry or oversaturated field? Is your desired position readily available in your selected geographic area? Being open to relocation may improve your chances. Can you apply your knowledge and skills to an industry that is experiencing growth?
Tip Four: Rethink your current job search.
What job search strategies are you currently using? If you are concentrating your efforts on strategies that are typically the least effective (like online job boards and newspaper ads) your job search will take much longer to yield results. Consider incorporating job search strategies that yield higher results, like networking and direct targeted mailing campaigns.
Tip Five: Re-evaluate the way you are communicating your message verbally and in print.
Communicating your message to potential employers in a clear and compelling manner is critical to job search success. Re-examine your resume. Does it communicate your value to employers by addressing how your skills and experience will meet the employer's specific needs? Practice communicating your value in response to typical interview questions, including, "Tell me about yourself."
Tip Six: Maintain your intensity level and a positive outlook.
It is easy to become discouraged over the course of a lengthy job search. Keep a positive outlook and maintain a high-level of focus and intensity throughout your job search for quicker results. Taking a systematic approach to your job search will help you to stay organized and on track during your job search. Yet, it is important to pursue other interests during your job search. Enjoy spending time with friends and family. Renew your interest in a hobby. Tackle a project you wouldn't have time to if you were working. Spending time in other pursuits provides a much-needed reprieve from the stress of a job search. You'll be energized and ready for the next leg of your job search.
Tip Seven: Build a solid support system.
If a self-guided job search has netted limited results; consider working with a career or job search coach. Your coach will help you identify any problem areas and offer suggestions for improvement. Enlist the help of family and friends or connect with other job hunters. In recent times, there are some words in the English language that seem to have experienced a shift in meaning. One of those words is the word, "cheap." A lot of us would gladly, for example purchase extremely useful items on the "cheap." Cheap USB drive for example. At the end of the day, we are not necessarily looking to brag about some sort of special purchase. Cheap USB drive make sense because they are inexpensive, yet functional as portable data storage devices.
Cheap jump drives are a great way to save money on what used to be a luxury concept. Before the age of flash drives, starting from the very beginning, we were confined to floppy disks. Unlike cheap USB drive, there was no hope of getting a video file, or even an Mp3 on a floppy disk. Then again, in that day and age, video and music files were at their beginning, so the mention of cheap thumb drive is slightly absurd. Internet speeds were barely able to play music of video at this point, rendering the need for portable data like a USB Drive to be non-existent, let alone even addressable.

Let's see a CD-Rom try and survive that. We think, not.
Cheap USB drives certainly have some formidable competition from DVD-Roms, however. DVD-Roms are great data storage systems for multimedia - and effectively replaced the VHS beginning in the 90s a and ruled for the first decade of the 21st century. However, DVDs suffer the same fragility issues as CD-Roms, and now that cheap USB drives are increasing in storage size continually, it's only a matter of time before flash drives actually end up becoming the true portable data storage vector of choice, if even right now that becomes hard to imagine at this point.
So as you can imagine, the word cheap is no longer necessarily negative, or derogatory when describing something at this point. What Was Your Worst Job? For those who breeze right through the self-promotion, you want to probe at the other side of the coin-- failures or weaknesses. Just as we want people on our team who are rock stars at work, we also want people who can take direction, admit when they need help or when an idea was just plain bad. In asking about a worst job, you want to understand what it was about that experience that made the candidate unhappy. You also want to make sure that your organization isn't strikingly similar to the one that the applicant hated. With a little ingenuity and careful planning, kids outdoor fun doesn't have to put a drain on your pocketbook. Here are seven ideas for creating ultimate kid fun:
1. Think outside the box. A good example is your local municipal golf course. Most municipals have a practice putting green adjacent to the clubhouse which you are welcome to use free of charge. You can turn this into a free putt-putt activity for your entire family.

Owning a car involves more than just making sure the fuel tank is full, that there is windshield wiper fluid in the car and that the tire pressure is not below the stated number in the owner's manual. Everyone that owns a car should know how to change a tire, change the oil and should know how to jump start the battery in their car in case the car stalls while on the road. Jump starting a car is not as easy as it sounds and there are a handful of steps that need to be followed for the jump start to be completed successfully and safely.
The first step in jump starting a car is to park the jumper car in close proximity to the stalled vehicle. Usually most jumper cars are placed only five feet or so from the stalled car with their fronts facing each other. Just make sure that the two cars do not touch in any way. Make sure you use clean jumper cables and never let them dangle into the engine compartment where they can get caught on belts or the fan. Once the jumper cables have been readied for the project, make sure the ignition is off in both cars and set the parking brake of each car. Make sure either car is in neutral or park. Turn off all lights and radios but put the hazards on if you are on the side of a road.
Now you can begin the jumping process. Place one of the positive jumper cables onto the positive terminal of the battery of the stalled vehicle. Then connect the other positive end of the cable to the positive end of the battery terminal in the jumper car. Now attach the negative end of the cable to the negative end of the battery terminal on the jumper car. Attach the other negative end of the cable to an unpainted metal surface on the engine of the stalled car. By doing this, the vehicle is now further grounded.
Before performing the jump start, make one final check to make sure that the jumper cables are securely attached to the vehicle and are not near any moving parts on the engine. Now you can start the jumper car and let it idle for a handful of minutes. Once the idling has been done for around five minutes you can now start the stalled car. Once the stalled vehicle is started, make sure that both vehicles stay on and have them idle for another five minutes or so. If the stalled vehicle won't start, do not keep trying. This will lead to damage of the starter on the stalled vehicle.
Once you are able to start the stalled car you can disconnect the starter cables. Take them off in the reverse order of how you put them on. Also, do not let them touch each other or anything under the hood. To be sure that the stalled vehicle will not stall again, take it to an auto body shop for a complete battery charge and quick once over.

Analyzing Your Relationship Roadmap - Treasure Map or Fire Starter?
We all follow our self-created Roadmap hoping that it will lead us to relationship bliss. Question? Has following your Roadmap led you to dig up relationship treasure? If it hasn't, maybe a better use for it would be to help start your next fire. Read on to learn how you can turn your "kindling" into a relationship treasure map.
You may have used Yahoo! Maps or MapQuest to identify the best route to your desired destination. I don't know about your experiences with these services, but I have been led astray on more than one occasion. Instead of directing me to where I wanted to go, I have found myself at dead ends far too often. What went wrong? The database that these services used to create my directions had flawed information. I, however, believed that the directions were accurate and therefore did not question them. Sound familiar?
Earlier, I asked you to think about how successful has your Relationship Roadmap been in leading you to your desired relationship destination. Now, I'll grant you that finding your way across town is a little easier than finding the mate of your dreams, but the dynamics of both ventures are systemically similar. Consider: Has your Roadmap led you to find the mate of your dreams, or has it consistently led you to relationship dead ends? If it has, it's time to toss this flawed atlas to the side and create a better one. Here are some easy steps to get you started.
1)Challenge every belief you have about Relationships that you've stored in your personal database or what I call your "Emotional Library."
I use the word "emotional" in conjunction with "library" because just about all information that you've stored in your personal database has an emotional component attached to it. For example, think of your first kiss. Along with the information that you stored about how to manipulate your lips, you also stored information about the emotions that you experienced while kissing. That is, you stored general basic ideas about the act of kissing (i.e., how hard to press your lips, how far to open your mouth, etc.) along with how you felt on an emotional level (i.e., your heart may have been racing, goose bumps may have appeared all over your body, etc.). These two elements, basic descriptive information and emotional context, combined to create your own knowledge about kissing, which you then stored in your Emotional Library. As you thought about this kiss, you may have even re-experienced some of the emotions that you felt on that day.
Now, think about the first time that you were introduced to Algebra. Unless you have a math phobia or a passion for learning new mathematical equations, you'll probably have a harder time retrieving information about your emotional state, in this instance. This doesn't mean that one emotional component is more important than the other. Rather, it points out that there is a wide range of knowledge, some of which will be easy for you to locate, while other information will be more difficult to access.
As you can see, as you explore your knowledge base, it will be very important for you to look at the factual information that you've stored (the sky is blue) as well as its emotional component (the blue sky makes me feel happy). Why is this important? Consider this: the reason that you're exploring your Emotional Library is to locate false and misleading information, information that you erroneously believe is helping you to successfully navigate through life and create your dream relationship. Once you've located this inept knowledge, you can replace it with useful and productive knowledge that leads to positive self-change. But first, it's very important for you to realize that if you fail to rid yourself of both components of false knowledge (factual and emotional) you'll fail to create useful new knowledge and, therefore, another Roadmap that will lead you to another relationship dead end. Thus, take a moment to write down your morals, values, and beliefs about relationships. Ask yourself, "What knowledge is working for me and what information is not working?" It is paramount that you find the false and misleading information and delete it!
2)If it looks like water and it tastes like Water, it's Probably Sand!
You've probably seen a movie where some poor soul is crawling, weak from lack of food and water, across the desert floor. Desperate and hopeless, this lost traveler looks up and, to his amazement and delight, sees a body of water 20 yards ahead. His prayers answered, he musters what little strength he has left and makes a rapid stagger toward rejuvenation. As he gets closer, his feet kick faster from excitement. At the water's edge, he leaps into the air, his hands out in front like an Olympic diver, and plunges into . . . a face full of sand. There never was any water. It was an illusion, a mirage. It wasn't real, but his mind believed it was real. The man wanted water so badly, the need to acquire water became the overriding thought in his mind, so much so that his mind finally created the illusion of water, if only to bring temporary relief to his unbearable agony. Now, very discouraged, our nomad is resigned to assume he will die. Once again, he falls to the desert floor and resumes his slow crawl. Does this mirror your relationship history in any way? Sometimes one can get so lonely that his or her mind will trick one into thinking that his/her relationship roadmap has led him/her to relationship Utopia. When in fact, one has fallen for a relationship mirage. Be on the lookout for relationships that move to fast and appear to good to be true. Make sure to nurture and love yourself before trying to love and nurture another. If you expect others to give you what you're not willing to give yourself, you'll be eating a lot of sand.
3)Avoid the familiar path.
Human beings are naturally drawn to the familiar. And our self-authored Roadmaps have a lot to do with that. Think about one of your bad break-ups. You were really upset for some time and then you started to feel better. Once back to feeling like your old familiar self, you picked up your flawed roadmap, stated, "Things will be different this time," and began another painful journey. This pattern is played out in various ways. You find a new person to date, as you tell yourself that this new person is "different" from all the girlfriends or boyfriends you've dated in the past. Well, predictably this turns out to be a relationship mirage, and, after quickly jumping into bed and getting emotionally connected way too fast, you discover that things haven't changed at all. In fact, this "new love" is very familiar and looks just like the "old love." To your surprise or horror, this girlfriend or boyfriend shows many of the same characteristics, foibles, and mannerisms of all your exes. Once again, you find yourself choking on sand. Hence, look to date someone that is not "your type." Try something new and remember to constantly review the new knowledge that you're using to create your new Roadmap to Relationship Bliss.
How to Ollie Fast - How to Ollie in Two Weeks or Less
The ollie is one of the easiest skateboarding tricks, yet one of the most important. Learning how to do an ollie can seem like a challenging task to beginner skateboarders, but if set and follow a two week action plan, you're guaranteed to learn how to ollie in no time!
I strongly recommend that you practice from half an hour to an hour a day if you want to learn how to ollie as quick as you can. I suggest you practice on weekdays and take a break or just go skate around on the weekends.
Before you start, you must know what the ollie looks like. I suggest you watch some "how to ollie" videos on the internet so you know how they should look and the basic steps.
Days 1-2
For the first two days, you'll want to practice getting the foot position down. Footing is key in learning how to ollie!
You want to place your front foot a little ahead of the board, and your back foot on the tail of the skateboard, with the ball of your back foot in the center of the tail. For the first two days, just practice this foot position and make sure you're comfortable.
Days 3-5
For the rest of the week, I recommend you practice the general motion of the ollie. One of the most helpful ways to learn how to ollie is to visualize the trick in your mind first.
Stand over the board, in the ollie position. See yourself:
1. Popping the tail by slamming your back foot down hard on the tail
2. Jumping up
3. Dragging your front foot up towards the front of the board and
4. Leveling the board out and landing on the skateboard bolts
The key in learning how to do an ollie is being able to put those three things together.
After you visualized the ollie, it's time to stand on the board and try it out. Remember to slam, jump, and drag.
Days 8-14
For the second week, you should continue practicing your ollies. By now, you should know exactly how to do an ollie, but probably have trouble actually getting the skateboard up. If you're having a little bit of trouble, try out these tips:
- Do not bend too far down, because this can throw off your balance. Just give a slight squat.
- Suck up your legs after you pop to help get the board in the air
- Stay centered over your board as you pop and aim to land over the bolts
The only way to overcome this is practice and persistence. You have to experiment with the timing of the trick until you find something that works for you. It took me more than a month before I learned how to ollie.
Congratulate yourself when you finally learn how to ollie. You can now take them to new places, such as onto curbs, off of ledges and over obstacles!
